Magnum, Unilever’s major ice cream brand, has launched tubs containing recycled polypropylene plastic, as part of a bid to become more sustainable.
The company did not specify the percentage of the recycled content but told PNE in a written statement that the tubs were made using a mass balance approach.
“The recycled plastic is mixed with a conventional feedstock. All these materials are fully certified (ISCC-Plus Certification) to improve traceability in the value chain,” the company statement added.
The tubs, Unilever told PNE, have been developed in collaboration with Sabic; and Magnum has been working on the project since early 2018.
The company currently has 600,000 tubs available across Europe, in Belgium, Spain and The Netherlands, with 3 million more to be rolled out globally in 2020, Unilever announced Aug. 5.
The move is part of Unilever’s wider global commitment to ensure that at least 25% of its plastic packaging will come from post-consumer recycled content by 2025.
“Pleasure Seekers can now indulge in signature Magnum luxury with the knowledge that they can play a positive role in reducing the impact of plastics on the environment,” said Julien Barraux, vice president Magnum.
Magnum, according to Unilever, is the “world’s first” ice cream brand to offer packaging containing recycled plastic for its products.
